Research Journal 4/01/2018

I have chosen to study the evaluation of music throughout the years and how it has formed and changed the way generations are growing up and how elder generations are reacting to this change in young people. From the classical music that some would've grown up with to the now ever growing fan base of electrical music such as bassline and rap I want to research into how this has changed and how it is effecting the way children grow up. I also want to follow the evaluation of how lyrics have changed over the years and have become way more graphic than ever before by asking is this benefiting the younger generation as they will be more aware of the adult world or is it damaging their right to be innocent by being exposed to the idea of sex and drugs at such a young age?

These two albums were one of the most popular albums of their time with Abbey Road being released in 1969 and More life being released in 2017 there is quite a wide difference in both the music and the artists. another major change in music is how it is reached by its audiences, back in 1969 it might have been a while before you heard Abbey road because you would have had to go the record shop to physically buy the album where as in 2017 the album was available in so many different ways which meant it could be listened to the second it came out.

Even though my research is not about these artists in particular I do believe that they should have a huge involvement in my research as they are some of the biggest and most popular artists of their times and I do believe that they have had a big involvement in they way music has changed and is changing.

I feel that today I have completed a huge amount of work and have gained a lot of knowledge in what I am trying to research and create for this project. I do however want to start taking a deeper interest into other artists and how they have changed the sound of all different types of music but especially what is now known as "pop".

Samsara research journal

Samsara is a poetic documentary about the world and how different people live. The documentary does not have an audio other than fitting music to each different scene. There was many different themes in the documentary one of them being gun control, there was a shot of a family who each had huge guns and was standing there proudly with them. The next scene showed bullets being made in a factory to me I found this section of the film quite eye opening as I was confused as to why someone would be proud to be holding a weapon that could destroy lives. The documentary also showed a side of the world that we do not often see which is the native africans in their land just living their everyday lives. The documentary also showed the evolution of meat and how it goes from live animals to meat in the shop and then burgers in fast food chains and how this can also damage lives as we saw a very large man at the doctors who looked like he was being prepared for an operation. This was a poetic type of documentary which means it is just a series of different types of pictures and moving images, the types we were watching was issues in the world such as gun laws and obesity and then it moved on to showing different cultures from different parts of the world for example muslim traditions and African traditions. Even though it was really engaging to see the different cultures and traditions I was not really a fan of this type of documentary because I did not like that there was not a clear storyline or documenter.

Today we watched a documentary called Titticut folies which was about a mental hospital in the 1940s, it was a fly on the wall type documentary which meant there was no narration and the people who were being filmed seemed to be going about their everyday routine. I found this documentary very interesting because it was different to see a mental health institution from many years ago, especially to see how the residents were treated by the guards and to think about how that has changed over the years. Another thought I had was this is how the guards are treating them on camera imagine what they do off camera. In the institution we saw the residents putting on some kind of a talent show to perform to the guards, they seemed excited about this which tells me that they do not get to do this often which again strengthens my point that all film is fiction and sometimes things can be made up for the camera or even taken off. This documentary was a fly on the wall type of documentary which means there was no documenter, voice over or dialogue.

Today we watched a documentary called Americas most hated family, by Louis Theroux. This was really interesting as I got to watch something that I really did not agree with and tried to understand why they feel this way. The documentary was reflective. Which is the type of documentary I would prefer to watch as I find them more engaging and interesting. The family that the documentary was about was talked to by Louis in a non biast way this however I still did not change their opinion on what they believe in. They chanted things such as "God hates America" which personally I did not really understand because if God hated America so much then why would you live there. They also were really against gay people which in this day and age is wrong, we also saw them go and pickit soldiers funerals which was awful to see because these people have died so that they will be protected. However the documentary mode was the most interesting so far as I like the way the documenter spoke to the family about their beliefs and tried to talk some sense into them. In conclusion this has been my favourite documentary to watch so far.

Today we watched two different documentaries on crime in America, the documentaries were of different styles however were both telling stories of murder trials. the first one that we watched was interesting however was let down by the bad acting in the scenes when they would reenact the murder. In the first documentary the story was told by the family of the victim so in a way you could say that they were the documenters. However in the second one while the family was still being interviewed it was a lot less and there was a more of a voiceover which took the role of the documenter. This was the only documentary were I have not felt that people had been playing up for the camera as it is a very sensitive issue to them. I enjoyed watching two different types of documentaries which were about the same things to compare how they were different.

Today we watched a mockumentary called American vandal, this kind of took the mick out of real documentaries, which was different to what we have been watching  but also very amusing. in the documentary the documenter was also the camera man however he also looked a lot like Louis Theroux which to be was another way they have made it a mockumentary. As the programme was not very long we then spoke about CGI and how that has developed and changed in recent times. We also spoke about how we feel documentary has and will change in ears to come. Personally I do not think that documentaries will change or ever die out as you can document anything so there is always going to be something that someone will want to watch.

Today we carried on with our essays and showed our tutor our progress and how we are understanding everything, we then started talking about our interactive projects and we started testing out the layar app with mock up posters in preperation for our final posters. I found this interesting and am excited to carry on with this project as it is something I do not really know much about and am therefore really excited to learn more about it. Here are some pictures of me playing around with the layar app.

Diary entry 15/03/2018

Today I carried on with my essay about documentaries, I was focusing more on learning about the different modes of documentaries today and next week am looking to focus on the evolution of documentaries and looking into whether they will continue to be as popular in the future. I also started to look at the lay(ar) app to see how it works and to start understanding it more. I will carry on with my essay at home to continue with the progress.

Is all film fiction

“Every film is a documentary” this quote comes from “The introduction to documentary” by Bill Nicholas. Nicholas believes that there is more than one type of film. From previous experiences of watching different documentaries I have formed the opinion that all film is fiction, I believe this because when watching certain “reality” tv shows and documentaries I feel that the characters play up for the camera. They probably do this for more ratings or they are even told to do this by producers or directors. When watching the reality show "Geordie Shore" (2011-present) it is so easy to tell that the characters are told what to do and when to do it for example the cameras are on them and they act surprised when they are told that they have to get back into the house or that they are going on holiday somewhere. In comparison to this documenter Louis Theroux made a show “Most hated family in America” to me this documentary was very engaging and interesting because it was quite controversial to see what the family was hated for and what the family thought was the right thing in the eyes of God however,  I do believe the family that was being filmed were playing up for the camera to get attention and just like "Geordie shore" (2011-present) this will eventually end up in more ratings and maybe a bigger pay out in the end. Going back to Geordie shore in the first few seasons it did not have the same set up as it does now when the cast were told they were going away it was so clear that they did not know and when the cameras were on them in the first episode of the season they knew they were going into the house it was so much less fake and scripted.  In comparison to this a cast member of “house hunters” (1999-present)  was interviewed in a recent article where they said that they had already brought a house but they were still approached to go on the show the cast member said that they were told to say things such as “oh I really like the fact that it has a pool” and "I don’t like the fact that it has a pool" and the producers would decide which route to take in the editing process. This another reason which is proving my point that all film is fiction.  In my opinion the reason why producers do this is to make the show better to what they feel will get more ratings, and as the show grows over years and gets more popular it gets further and further away from its original goal which was a reality show. From studying camera angles in my class time I know that it can never be 100% natural and that camera operators will have to tell the cast members to re do some things so that they can get a better shot. Another documentary that we watched was "Titticut Follies" (1967)  which was an old documentary based on a mental health institution in America. This documentary was a fly on the wall, which means that there was no documenter or voice over.  The documentary showed the residents of the institution and the guards on what they do on a day to day basis. In the film we saw how the guards treated the residents and what they did to them. For example, there was one scene where one of the residents had just had a bath and the guards were making him stand naked in this freezing cold room soaking wet while they stood there and laughed at him. After watching this I formed the opinion that this is what we see while the cameras are in the building, imagine what they do to the residents when the cameras are not there and they know that they can get away with it.

Different types of documentary

There are lots of different types of documentary and each type has a different approach to it. For example, there is poetic mode an example of this is Samsara (2012) which was a complication of pictures and videos of the world and different cultures and how these cultures are affecting the way we are as people. In the documentary we saw the process of how animals are killed to make meat and how that meat in then cooked to create fast food, next we saw a very large person in a doctor office who looked like he was being prepped for an operation. This type of documentary will make you reflect on what you are being shown and how this has affected you your whole life without you realising. In this documentary there was no documenter instead there was just music which fitted eat different scene.

Another type of documentary would be reflective mode, this type of documentary is when the film maker contexts with the audience to engage them in the story he is trying to tell them. An example of this is Louis Theroux who has made many documentaries over the years, one of his most famous and controversial documentaries is "America's most hated family". The documentary was a two-part documentary which was 4 years apart when watching it was interesting to see how the cast had changed and developed especially the children of the family.  This type of documentary is what I would prefer to watch as I feel that the audience is involved with the interviewer and is finding out information alongside them.

One of the other types of documentary that we did not watch in class however is very popular all over the world, which is; observational mode which is also known as reality tv. This is when there is a group of people who are being filmed without any purpose the way in which they communicate with the audience is when they have private interviews. A good example of this is big brother as the housemates are not in the house for any real reason other than just entertainment. This mode of documentary can be quite controversial as some people do not agree with the content of the show as they find it not fit for tv viewing.

Expository mode; this mode of documentary is made to expose a story, a goof example of this could be 24 hours in police custody, as this film exposes the victims and criminals. There is usually original footage used to inform the audience of the crime, there is also often an interview with a police officer who will explain the crime in detail to the audience who may not understand.  In class we watched two episodes of this mode of documentary which explained

Participatory mode: This mode is often different to the others, it will be introduced by a few montage videos to introduce the subject of the documentary. We will then hear a voiceover of the filmmaker/presenter who will explain who he is and what the documentary will include. There is usually then an interview between the filmmaker and the subject of the documentary. This mode of documentary usually becomes quite touching and can often change opinions for some people, depending on what the topic is.

Performative mode; this type of documentary can be similar to participatory mode in the way that it notices the emotional and subjective aspects of documentary and addresses the audience emotionally.  It can again be like participatory mode in the sense that by the end of watching the documentary you could form a more informed opinion on the subject matter.

What is the evolution of documentary and will it die out over time?

The first ever documentary was called Nannook of the north (1922) in this documentary we follow a family in search for food. Documentaries have changed significantly since this film was first made, for example we now have special effects which are used in the editing process to make the documentary more interesting. For example in the last decade technology has developed so much that features like chromakey allows filmmakers to trick the audience into thinking the fake is reality especially in a documentary scenario.

Throughout the years there have also been many subgenres made such as mockumentaries there are many mockumentaries such as Borat (2006), which is about a filmmaker from Europe who goes to America to find out about life there. Some people find Borat (2006) very offensive because of the way it is made and edited. In the film, the people that are being interviewed by Borat are not aware that it is all fake and therefore the reactions are all real. In comparison to this there is a netflix series called American Vandal (2017) in this programme it is about a school which gets vanalised and some students are trying to solve the mystery of who did it, this type of documentary was all acting and was all completely fake. This type of sub-genre is becoming more and more popular with people of my generation, because it is very funny and some people may be able to relate to the humor, and because of its ever growing popularity I believe that this sub-genre will be something that will take over in the future.

However, saying this lots of people from my generation enjoy watching Blue planet (2001), where they will see animals in their natural habitats however what my argument is would Blue Planet (2001) be as popular if David Attenborough were not to be the presenter? I also believe that it is important to look at the both sides of every opinion and when Blue planet (2001) was made there was a spin off show called Walk on the wild side (2009) where there was voice overs on the animals, personally I found this very funny however some people though it to be wrong that animals were being portrayed in this way.

I believe that in the future there will always be documentary however I believe that there will be less modes for example I feel that poetic modes will die out or become less popular as people of my generation would rather be told the information than having to work it out for themselves. I also feel that there will be more reality, or 7 second documentaries such as: Vines this is because my generation does not have a very long attention span. So these sort documentaries would be perfect. Saying this I do believe that in the future there will be a niche for the old kind of documentaries that will still be made.

I also believe that documentaries will adapt to social ways and will change there subjects  to whatever may be the most important issues of the times. In more recent times green screen has become a huge part of film and I truly believe that this will continue and that documentaries will become a high quality as some of the top films are.

I believe that from completing this essay I have learned a lot about documentary and film, something I actually did not know was that there was different modes of documentaries and what they meant as before I was a passive audience member and would have never been able to tell the difference between the different styles. From being able to go through this process of research I have been able to understand the process of how these films are made.

I have also been able to look into reality shows in more depth to be able to understand just how they work and have come to the conclusion that all film is fiction and that I do believe documentaries will continue in the future however they will be a lot different to how they are now and that mockumentaries may become even more known and even more popular. So to conclude I have very much enjoyed completing this essay and am very happy with what I have found out and how I have presented this.

Diary entry 22/03/2018

Today I finally managed to complete my essay which you can see in above, from doing this essay I have really learnt a lot about documentary which again can be seen above. The research part of this essay was really interesting to learn all about. I now need to focus on my creative part of the topic in order to meet the deadline next Thursday.

Diary entry 29/03/2018

Today I finished the all of the unit requirements including the poster, I did not really find it challenging at all as using layar was really easy to follow. I found a evolution of music video which went all the way back from 900-2012, I then attached this video on to my poster so that when you scan the poster this is what comes up. I feel that the video explains the evolution of music very well and I am very pleased with my final product.

This is a video of my Lay(ar) poster in action which shows that my poster works perfectly. In regards to my poster I could have created the title in photoshop instead of word as it would have looked neater however photoshop is something that I am not used to and do not have much confidence with.
