Music videos

Mulcahy made successful music videos for several noted British pop acts –his early UK credits included XTC’s “Making plans for Nigel” (1979) and his landmark video for “The Buggles” “video killed the radio star” (1979) which became the first music video played on MTV in 1981.

In 1981 the first 24 hour music video channel launched which was MTV, since then MTV has become more popular and has different channel for different generes of music such as MTV Rocks, MTV RnB and much more.

Most Famous music videos since the 1980s

Micheal Jackson’s thriller in 1983

Micheal Jacksons's "Thriller" is still today known as one of the most iconic music videos of all time. It can also be known as the longest music video ever running for exactly 13 minutes and 44 seconds long. The videos budget was $500,000 which is not as much as other videos. The choreography in the video is also one of the most well known dances to this day.

Britney spears’ “Baby one more time” in 1998 in Britney's 'Baby one more time'  she is seen as a school girl dancing in the school corridors. This is again one of the worlds most famous dances the video shows the pop star going from being a young girl to being a young adult which is shown through her coustumes.

Lady gaga’s  “ Bad Romance” in 2009 the video is the most popular music video of the 00s. Lady gaga is known for her wacky ideas that can sometimes be quite controversal.

Each of these music videos have a high viewing rate especially “Thriller” which could possibly be recognised as one of the most famous videos of all time. However the most famous and viewed video of all time is Wiz Khalifa’s see you again ft Charlie Puth which has 2,904 148 095 views since 2015.

Assesment

Purpose

The purpose of this music video is  to show what the song is about which is having money being around women and being the most popular person. Another purpose of the video could be to promote the song and the artist, as Tom Zentti is not really very famous the video will help establish him as a artist.

Type

This music video is a dance theme the location of the video is in a big mansion where a party is going on. The video matches the beat of the music and the style of the song.

Codes

In this music video the camera angles shot types and movements are all very simple, in the video we see the basic camera movements such as; medium shots long shots, close ups however not many extreme close ups. I believe that these are the shots we see because the video does not have a narrative to it therefore the audience is not being told a story through the camera movements.

Music video idea mindmap

Conventions

In this music video we see lip syncing and Zentti singing to the camera, there are also sort clips of people dancing however the dancing is not a choreographed by anyone. the lip syncing in the video seems to be coming across as quite natural which is good as the audience can then relate to the video and think back to a time when they were at a party or having a good time with friends.

[Sadie Ama]
Baby I'm not here to start a fight
But I just thought I'd let you
(Just thought I'd let you know)
Cause the way that you've been treating me
It's so unfair baby it's so cold

Okay then watch what I say then
If you like champagne, swing my way then

All the galdem', what am I gainin'
What I, w-what am I gainin'?

Okay then watch what I say then
If you like champagne, swing my way then

All the galdem', what am I gainin'
What I, w-what am I gainin'?

[Tom Zanetti]
Got a unique swag and I pull it off
Give me any bassline and I kill it off
When I SoundCloud when I fan page
When a fan press play
Tempo up any way I drill it off

Boom C4 with the mic and it's going off
Pretty boy swag so flash yeah I'm showing off
Put me in a club any town any city man
Better beware the club roof's blowing off

Boom ba-ba-bam it's Zanetti in the mix
Giving all the ravers a sick refix

Bassline just from an electrode twist
Whether you need sound my styles are wickedest
I love getting high, fly like a G6
Too cool for school with a style that's crisp
City of Leeds top boy vocalist
And as for insomnia yeah that's sick

[Sadie Ama]
Baby I'm not here to start a fight
But I just thought I'd let you
(Just thought I'd let you know)
Cause the way that you've been treating me
It's so unfair baby it's so cold

Production Diary Entry 1

Today in my lesson I collected Secondary research for my music video and other dance music videos.  collected lots of different types of research such as; what the audiences thought of the videos by reading through comments of my chosen video.I also compared my chosen video to other dance videos to see how they contrast and how they are different. I found that most dance videos follow a similar pattern of being in a exotic country spending lots of money and spending time with either a partner or a group of friends.  I also looked at the different codes and conventions of music videos and what dance videos use in there videos for example lip syncing or using Chroma. I learnt what makes a good video and what the target audience enjoys watching.  I also learnt the difference between quantitive and qualitative and how to gather research and put it into a evaluation. I will improve my research by spending more time watching a verity of different music videos from different genres and compare them to the genre I am evaluating and evaluate what the codes and conventions are from that music video.

Production Diary Entry 2

In todays lesson I completed my Primary research, I did this by making a survey on survey monkey and then posting it onto Facebook and sending it to some people through whatssapp and snapchat. In my survey I asked peoples age, gender, how often they watch music videos, what their favourite genre of music is and what they would expect from a music video.  From completing the survey and already having some responses I have learnt that lots of people dont really watch music videos, and that most people will only ever watch music videos if they go viral. I learnt that lots of people prefer to see dialouge and a storyline in music videos.  In my secondary research I looked into what people have commented on Tom Zanetti's video to see what the audience thought of the video, through looking at these comments I saw  a lot of negative feedback. By reading this I have concluded that in my music video I would like to take a completely different approach, by making the music video focus less on a party theme and more about what the song is about.

Production Diary entry 3

In todays lesson we held another production meeting with our group, we came together to discuss what research we had all come up with on our own. Both me and another group member had both got the same research suggesting that not many people actually liked the video that we were analysing. We also discussed and decided that our music video should stray away from the theme of being rich and popular and leaning more towards a love theme between two people. After the production meeting I then re shared my survey on social media to try and get some more responses from people. I then went and carried on with my secondary research to try and find out what as an artist Tom Zanetti's appeal is, From doing this I learnt that Tom Zanetti was a very hardworking person to me personally this explains why in most of his videos he is showing off what he has and how rich he is. When doing my secondary research I have learnt a lot about other artists their videos and how they market them, i have been finding this music video research very interesting and I already feel that I am bettering my knowledge.

Secondary research

For my Music video project I have chosen the song “you want me” by Tom Zanetti to further my knowledge I have chosen to analyse some more of his videos such as; “More and More” ft. Karen Harding.

and “Darlin”.

Each of these videos have the same rich party vibe themes this tells me that Zanetti wants to show off the money he has and wants to spend his money on parties this means that Zanetti’s appeal that is being promoted is that he is a popular man that is known by everyone as in most of his videos he is always around glamorous women it is rare to see a shot of him on his own without at least one or two people near him looking like they are having an amazing time. The audience will then be given the idea that Zanetti’s life is always like that.

Other dance videos are normally quite similar to Zanetti’s videos, they do not exactly follow a narrative story line however the audience can easily understand what is going on. For example some dance videos will follow a couple around in a nice setting/location. For example Duke Dumont “I Got You” ft. Jax Jones

or Jonas Blue “Mama” ft. William Single

these songs come under the dance genre and the videos follow the same theme of being in an exotic country with friends having a good time, spending lots of money. I would say that Zanetti has made his videos to be quite different from the usual dance music videos as from doing my research I have noticed that most of the dance videos are all the same.

The codes and conventions of music videos means what you would expect to see in music videos for example; in Zanetti’s the audience sees him lip syncing to the camera, the video is set in a glamorous location in this case it is a rich mansion. In most music videos we see the artist around lots of people who seems to be having lots of fun. The camera shots are usually very fast and quick to keep in time with the beat. Other codes and conventions could be chroma key, or choreography most music videos that feature choreography are pop songs not so much dance music videos.

The comments on Zanetti’s video mostly say that they like the song however they do not like the music video as they see it to be "cringe".

This is showing me that when producing my own music video I should try to avoid the party theme and try to lean more towards what other dance artists do which seems to be what the audience like more. However on the video there are more likes then there are dislikes, a total of 94k likes and 7k dislikes.

Lots of music videos will have copyright for example Michael Jackson’s Thriller will have copy right to the choreography as it has become world known and is often performed by dancers everywhere.

Thriller is one of the most iconic videos of all time if you want to perform the original choreography you would have to pay royalties to the Jackson family. Thriller would probably be one of the most protected music videos in terms of copyright as many dance schools would use it for show finales, they would then have to pay a sum of money to the Jackson family, this is one of the reasons the song is so iconic as it is still making money today.

Most music videos are usually distributed via youtube some successful music videos will go viral, most artist will promote their music videos through their social media accounts such as; Instagram, snapchat, facebook and twitter. For example when Taylor swift was preparing to realise her new album she deleted everything on her Instagram the world noticed this and there was many unanswered questions. Finally a few days later Swift started posting many videos of snakes, everyone was again confused until she posted a video announcing her new album “Reputation”. This is an excellent example of how artists have the power to control or have an input on what the world is talking about, Swifts video for “look what you made me do” was deeply analysed by lots of different reporters in many different articles. By doing this Swift has built up her target audience as even people that don’t particularly listen to her will be thinking they want to watch the video to see what all the fuss is about.

All music videos will be cut to the beat of the song this video tutorial that I watched has helped me to understand how it is done.

From research I have learnt that as a person Tom Zanetti is actually very hardworking, before he was famous he had several jobs including window cleaner. As a result of learning this I have now realised that this is why in all of his videos he is showing off his money as he worked very hard to so therefore he feels as if he has the right to do this. However the audience doesn’t really respond to this in a positive way they probably feel as if he is showing off and they find it really annoying. From doing this research I now know that in my music video I should try to avoid this theme as there is clearly a gap in the market for a better video that audiences will like better.

In other research I have looked at Zanetti’s social media accounts mainly Instagram and by looking at this I can see that he mainly promotes things of his he also does some advertising and promoting for other companies. However the most surprising information I discovered is that what he posts the most of is actually pictures of his son. This tells me that Zanetti wants to work hard for his son.

In the time that I have spent researching I have learnt a lot about music videos such as; how they are formed and put together, how they are promoted afterwards by the artist/band on their social media accounts such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and snapchat. I have also learnt how to analyse lyrics of a song and music videos and see how they do or do not relate to each other. Through this assessment I hope to be able to learn a lot more about music.

Primary Research

What is your gender?

As my first question on my survey I asked what is your gender? 61% said Female and 39% said male. I asked this question so then I know I have a lots of different answers from lots of different opinions and the survey is not biased in any way. From asking this question it helps to be able to tell what comments were written by who.

What is your age?

I also asked peoples age as you can clearly see I have had a wide range of answers however i had more responses from the age group of 18-24. I feel this is because of the platform that I shared my survey on which was Facebook so I know that most of my friends who are my age would have done this survey. I asked this question so I could easily see who was responding to my survey and so that I could analyse the rest of the questions in better detail.

What is your ethnicity?

I asked people their ethnicity and the response I got was largely white/caucasian. I asked this question as different ethnicities may have been brought up in different cultures which may alter their responses to other questions in my survey. This question was also put in my survey so that the survey was not biased. Even though I did have some responses from other ethnicities the larger group was white so that would be the group i focus on the most.

Do you watch music videos? if so why or why not

I asked in my survey if people watch music videos. When analysing my results I noticed I had a mixture of different responses lots of people saying they often watch music videos, lots of people saying they are pointless and lots of people saying they will only watch them for a certain purpose. For example I had a response that said I only watch music videos for school assemblies, i had one that said no I don't have the time most are pointless and some people saying they watch them for pre drinks when going out. Through asking this question I managed to gather a lot of information I would say that this is the most important question on the survey as from this question it tells me if people even care to watch music videos and what their opinions are on them. One response said that music videos theses days are not as good as they used to be and from a previous question asking what is your age i know that the person that wrote this is going to be over 18-24.

What is your favourite genre of music?

I asked people what their favourite genre of music is the most popular results were pop and rock I had no responses for classical or grime and very little for country and dance. This tells me that more people listen to the top 40 charts which is mainly pop music. Personally this is not what I would enjoy myself however it seems to be the one of the most popular genres of music. I asked this question because I am making a dance genre music video and I thought it would be useful to find out how big the dance genre fan bass is and from my survey i have found out it is not very big.

What was the last music video you watched?

I asked people what was the last music video they watched was I was surprised by the difference in answers lots of people could not remember which tells me not many people watch music videos any more and lots of people could tell me exactly what they watched and why which also tells me that music videos are still watched by many people. One of the responses was Taylor swift- Look what you made me do the person said that they only watched it because there was beef. This answer gives me different forms of information which will help me when making my own video.

What would you expect from a music video?

I asked people what they would expect from a music video the most popular responses was to see the artist and storyline. From asking this question I know that in my video I need to make the storyline of the video clear to the audience. By doing this I should have a successful music video.

How often do you watch music videos?

I asked people how often they watched music videos I was again quite surprised by the answers to this question because lots of people in previous questions had been saying they often watch music videos for different things however here the most popular answer was hardly ever. This will help with my research as now i know music videos are not often watched.

Do you only watch music videos that go viral?

Many people said that they do only really watch music videos that go viral because they would like to be able to take part in conversation if they here other people talking about it. I was not surprised by this answer as i do the same thing myself. However this does tell me that it is worth spending a lot of time trying to be creative with music videos as then you will get a larger audience watching it.

what would you expect from a dance music video?

The results from this question tell me that what I am planning for my music video as the most popular answer is party theme which helps me with my planning as then I know I am on the right track.

Production diary 4

Today I finished my secondary and primary research, I collected all of my answers from the survey and screenshot them then wrote a short description about how each answer helps my understanding of what a music video should include. Even though I have been doing work at home as well as in college I was quite under pressure when it came to finalising everything. To prevent this from happening again I will try my hardest to take on more work at home and not waste time changing the layout of things when I could have done that at home. The next step will be to start planning our music video pitch which we will have to preset to the class. I am feeling quite nervous about this because I have never done anything like this before and like all my work I would like it to be of a high standard. I hope that the pitch goes well and that the power point is a success.
