Live TV
Codes and conventions of live tv
Live tv production has been running for many years, as you can imagine in order to create a successful live show you would need a huge studio. Most studios are used for more than one show which would mean the studio would need a very high ceiling so that each show can be lit in the way it needs to be. Each studio also comes with whats called a gallery which is where the director and producer sit to make sure everything runs smoothly.
Chat show:
Chat shows can be very popular as they will often feature someone new every week, they usually air Friday and Saturday nights after the news when most children will be asleep. Chat shows are popular and have a wide audience range as different celebrities often appear to promote their new album/film/tv show. A great example would be the Graham Nortan show which airs on Friday nights the host is warm and welcoming with different A list celebs every week and a live audience.
This is a friends themed clip of the Graham Norton show which shows us lots of clips from different shows in which he plays little games with the guests to engage the audience
Game show:
Game shows usually have a huge cash prize which is why they have a huge fan base as people will tune in for the suspense. Some people may not realise that there is a huge difference between a quiz show which is strictly questions for example the chase and a game show where the contestants will complete tasks such as the cube. Interestingly you will never see a huge cash prize on the BBC and the game/quiz shows on that chanel often feature celebrities more than ITV or chanel 4 as the money would be the tv licence payers money and people would complain that it is being spent on huge cash prizes and not what they were told they are paying, however if it is a celebrity the money will go to charity where as on chanels such as ITV the money comes from the sponsors.
News:
The news comes in lots of different forms for example, 24 hour news, every 30 minute updates or airing at 13;00, 18;00 and 22;00. The news will always have top stories and will talk about current events. Most news channels have weather segments and local area segments. The news can also take priority over channel scheduling if it is breaking news for example he death of princess Diana or a terror attack. Some channels have different types of news for example the BBC has current events in the form of politics and famous deaths where as there is some channels for example E! have news which is more celebrity gossip which would probably be classed as less important.
Magazine show:
This type of show comes in lots of different styles and are usually on in the morning. They are so successful and usually consecutive award winning shows. They are so popular as there is always something for someone as they have so many different segments such as a cooking segment, medical advice segment and sometimes even debates about names for children. A brilliant example would be this morning as it is presented by two really welcoming and recognizing hosts wo the audience feel they get to know through the duration of the show.
This is an episode of the cube where the contestant wins nothing. It is only a short clip where we see the contestant play one game however explains what the game is and what it means.
This is a short clip from BBC news in which shows a story about Donald Trump visiting Asia. This is a usual set up for any news channel and not much would be different in terms of the way that the news is delivered.
This is a magazine show which is on in the morning, this interview clip tells a story which is a current event in the news. This is something that this morning does really well as they keep up to date which is what people like.
TV listings

I have researched into the tv listings for the week on the radio times website, from what I can see the most popular time of the day for live tv is in the morning on ITV 1 as they have a wide range of chat and magazine shows. These shows are only aired o weekdays and from my research I can see that on Saturdays and Sundays it is more re runs of other programmes. On Friday and Saturday nights there is a few more adult themed chat shows such as the graham Nortan show and the Jonathan Ross show. From my research I can also see that ITV is the most popular channel.
September 2017

November 2017

As you can clearly see Coronation street is the most popular viewing for September 2017, I think this is because the viewers are very loyal to the programme as it has been running for over 50 years.
In November 2017 the most popular show is "I'm a celebrity get me out of here" as this programme is only aired once a year for 4 weeks. Many people would have watched this season probably more than any other as one of the presenters was of high interest at the time which could be why the ratings were so high. This helps with our idea as I now know that to get good ratings we should keep up to date with current events.
In April 2018 the most popular show was "Britains got talent" as this would have been the time in which they were airing the audition process which is always more popular than the live shows.
April 2018

Following on from my research I have found that the most popular show on ITV is Coronation street for the rest of the months in the year this is also the case which tells me that because this programme obviously has a lot of loyal viewers we should advertise our programme during this show. We could also get in touch with the script writers to ask if we could somehow include the name of our show in their script. This would really help us gain viewers as Coronation street has such a loyal following that the viewers would trust them. The most popular day of the week for viewing times varies between months as in April the most popular day was a Saturday as this is the day that Britains got talent airs. Each show is special and unique for its own reasons, Coronation street has been airing for over 50 years which means it has such a loyal following, I'm a celebrity get me out of here only airs for 4 weeks once a year and may feature some peoples favourite celebrities, or sometimes even has soap stars included, Britains got talent has also been airing for many years and is only on once a year this show will also have a loyal following which means it will have such a high viewing.
Production meeting
In our production meeting we decided that our show was going to be a mix between a magazine show and a game show which will air on Saturday nights at around 7pm. We have taken a lot of inspiration from "Ant n Dec Saturday night takeaway". We have decided to air the show on itv as this means we will have a high viewing due to loyal viewers, the show will have different segments in which we will talk to the audience and play games with them. If the show was real we would also be looking into having a guest each week. We have chosen this idea because we feel like it will do really well for the time it is on and for the target audience we will have.
Task five
The most popular programme on itv at the moment is Coronation street as it has been running for so many years and has gained a loyal following.

This is the demographics of a typical Coronation street viewer however I do also understand that this isn't the only type of person that would watch the show, as the show has been airing for so many years that it may be something that someone has grown up with and thats why they watch it.

This is the demographics of a person who watches Emmerdale it says that they may work in retail and that the gender is mainly female, however similar to coronation street I know that this isn't completely right as I know loyal followers of Emmerdale who do not meet any of these demographics however I know that these demographics are based on the types of people that answer the questionnaires. From my findings I know that when I create a questionnaire I will need to ask people what types of tv shows they watch and why? In order to see who our target audience would be.

This is the character profile for the typical question of sport viewer which is quite different to the typical Emmerdale or Coronation Street viewer, for example the monthly disposable income is £1000 whereas the monthly disposable income for a soap viewer is £125. The typical viewer is male and not female and works in sport or entertainment. This will help me in my research as I know now what kind of viewers the BBC has compared to Itv and how this will effect our audience and viewings.
In conclusion to this from researching all of these different types of people and what they watch I have gained a lot of information on what this means for our show and how we should target our audience. From looking at the audience profiles I also know that different people watch these shows and that the audience profiles do not mean that know one else can watch these shows. I am now going to construct my own questionnaire with my two other group members to find out exactly who our target audience would be and why and exactly how we would target them.
Loose Women
Loose women is a mid afternoon panel chat show, the show features different guests everyday where they will talk about different subjects and current events. The show is on for an hour every week day from 12:15-13:15 after the award winning "this morning". To be able to advertise during this show for our region it would cost around £1,690, even though this is still a lot of money it is the cheapest time slot for the day and is so expensive compared to other regions because we are so close to London. The panel does take on serious situations just like the one above however the main aim of the show is to be fun and upbeat. the colour theme of the show is colours that women would love and warm to for example the warm pink and light green. The light green is a colour theme that the Itv have for their logo. This will help our development with

I have looked at the yougov website to see the profile for the typical loose women viewer, this profile suggests that the typical viewer is a housewife which for the time of day that the show is on I agree with as most people at this time of day are at work.
This morning
This morning is a magazine show which airs from 10:10-12:15 every weekday since 1988 which has had lots different presenters through out the years. This is a short clip with this years love island winners, I feel that this clip shows how current and up to date the show can be as the couple had only been back in the country a couple of days. The colour scheme of this show is similar to Loose Women however slightly different as their is no pink but the colours are still warm and welcoming to the audience. As we are looking to create a magazine show we will take a lot of inspiration from this morning however as it is airing on a Saturday night it will have a bit more glamorous and a bit more in your face.

This is the you gov profile for the typical "this morning" which is very similar to "Loose Women" as again when the show airs most people are at work so the show is targeted more towards a stay at home mums.
The one show
The one show is a magazine show which airs on BBC one every week night, the show is a little more formal than "This morning" it airs at 7pm until 7;30 as it is on BBC one there is no ad breaks and so no ad prices to share. The colour scheme for the one show is heavily red based which is the same as the colours for BBC one. This colour represents seriousness and formal which will tell the viewer that that channel is reliable and trustworthy. From watching the one show I know that I like the chat show element however I would want to use some more exciting colours as I would want everyone to fee that they can watch my show without feeling like it is really formal.

This is the yougov profile for a typical one show viewer which is sort of similar to the profiles for people who watch itv shows. However I do also understand that this does not mean only these types of people watch the show as the show is open for everyone to watch.
Graham Norton show
The graham norton show is one of the BBCs' most popular shows, it has lots of different seasons and has guests stars every week who come on the show to promote their latest project. As you can see from the video above just like the one show the colour scheme is red which represents a formal enviroment. Which is again for our show I am not looking to have.

This is the you gov profile for the graham Norton show which shows who exactly the typical viewer is however again I know that this doesn't mean that this is the only type of person that would watch this show.
Production meeting
Questionnaire analysis
From our questionnaire we have discovered that our target audience is going to be:

What are the objectives of the production?
The Saturday night in team want to make a show that will entertain the older generation in a humorous way and also because of the time of year celebrate Halloween. The production team feel that this show will be very different to any other show that is currently on the air because of the games we are planning to play.
Provide a synopsis of your production?
Our show will be a game show, with live performances and small interviews with the contestants to create and calm and relaxed environment for the audience and viewers. The production team would like to play 3 different games at 10 minutes each with a halloween theme for example: Pumpkin carving competition, Guess that body part, and bobbin for apples as well as chatting to the contestants about who they are and what they do. The team would also love a live music performance again with a halloween theme.
What is the title of your production?
The production team have come up with a working title which is "Saturday night in" the title describes exactly what the show is as it will be airing on a Saturday night.
How many presenters will you have and how has it helped the planning of the production?
Saturday night in will have 2 presenters one male and one female, this has been planned as the contrast between the two would be really good for the show as they would work very well together. The production team feel that the presenters need to have a good relationship as if they have known each other for years, so that they will bounce off it. The production team is looking for a petite brunette female with brown eyes with a funny and girly personality. The male that the production team are looking needs to have similar characteristics in that he also needs to have brunette hair both presenters need to be similar in height so that the camera can stay in one place. This has helped in the planning of production as SNI know who it is they want and why they would want them due to watching lots of different shows with presenters to take inspiration from them.
What research have you done and how has it helped the planning of the production?
The production team have conducted a questionnaire asking people lots of different questions about their day to day life and what that includes from the responses the team have been able to come up with an idea of the time and place that the show should air. In the questionnaire the team had some mixed answers which actually helped the team as they discovered that the show should be made for all audiences.
What is the format of your show?
The show is going to be a game show which for this special episode will have a halloween theme.
Where does your production fit in terms of format?
The show will air 19:30-20:30 which is within watershed as the team feel that they can reach a wider audience as it will be harder to offend anyone. The production will include, 3 mini halloween themed games at 10 minute each e.g: Guess the body part, pumpkin carving and bobbing for apples as well as a free social media competition for the audience/viewers to get involved in and a live music performance.
The primary target audience is 45-55 + settled older couples with children who are working class.
The secondary audience is 25-35 younger couples who are just staring to settle down who are also working class.
The tertiary audience is 12-18 year olds media savvy which will reflect the social media age,
The technical equipment "Saturday night in" will require is;
JVC pro HD GY/Hanaiou rent for 2 weeks
TV studio- £10,500
Vision mixer £300 x4 = £1200
Director 500 x 10= £5000

Saturday night in is very excited to air the show and see what the future holds for any exciting changes and possible themes for the show.
Pitch
Pitch slides

Evaluation
Today as a group we presented our pitch for our show idea, I felt that we pitched really well and gave a clear and well thought out version of our idea and what we wanted to create.
As a group we split the different slides between us all and spoke about the different rounds and what we wanted to our shows running order to be.
We spoke about the different audiences we are hoping to target and why we wanted to target them in particular, I felt that this was specifically a good point in our pitch. We also provided a mood board to show our inspirations from other shows and what we wanted to take from those shows. For example: "Celebrity juice" and how we wanted the set to look in terms of a Halloween special.
From watching the pitch back we now know that we need to improve on when we on our target audience and what the content involves. I would say what we also need to work in is knowing who should answer the questions at the end of the pitch. After the pitch was over we were then told who the winning idea was and it was our show which we are really happy about as as a group we did work really hard to come up with an idea that everyone agreed with and liked. We were then given our roles which I was quite disappointed with as I will be a camera person and it is not something I feel I have any confidence with or interest in.
For the future I now now that I need to work on communicating with my team and making sure we all need to know what to say and when to say it.
