Diary entry 4/11/2017
Today we started to edit our adverts first we made folders to sort out all the clips into different scenes and decide if we are going to use them or not. I decided most of my clips were good enough to use even if they may need a little bit of editing. I then screenshot every folder to show what was in them. Then it was time for me to start editing, at first I thought everything was going to be okay in editing but then as a group we all realised that our clips were too long and speeding them up on premier pro did not look good. The deadline for the rough edit is tomorrow so I am going to have to make sure that the advert fits to 30 seconds as that is the time which we pitched.
Rough edit
This is my rough edit of my advert for Nike, later on I will have completed a peer assessment and therefore will know what to change to make the advert look even better.
Evaluation

Today I completed my rough edit of my viral advert and then had some peer assessment from one member of my group and one outside member. Both said that my edit of the advert was easy to understand and that the narrative of the storyline was very clear the main improvement I need to make in the advert is using better shots for the pack shots as you can not see the nike tick. When I asked the question How would you change it? One response was "use more pack shots" and another was remove the pack shot scene everything else works well." I think I will keep the pack shot scene as it fits well with the advert and otherwise the advert will not be long enough. I also asked if the song fitted well with the advert from this question I had a very good response , both people said the song fitted really well with the advert and the theme of the advert which I am really happy with as I chose the song myself. The areas of improvement I need to make our, changing the football celebration scene as it runs for too long and for a split second Cassius is still seen when it transitions to the pack shot scene.
I hope to finish my final edit by tomorrow at 12;15 by then I need to make sure that I either cut the celebration scene or to fit the picture over the green screen or make the picture longer so that it looks good and makes my advert look even better. I also need to change the pack shot scene so that you can see that Nike tick and it will stand out even more. I believe that these changes will make my advert even better.
Final edit
Diary entry 6/12/2017
Today in class I finished my final edit of my Nike advert I then went to upload it to youtube which was fine then moved on to creating my survey so I could see what people thought of my final edit, I need sent out the survey to different people and someone informed me that there was a copyright problem with my video which then meant that I had to try loads of different methods to try and fix this problem which did not work. Then I had to change where I put my video which will hopefully work and will not get deleted because of copyright with all the responses I get I will change some of my final edit so that it can be even better.
Analysing my survey

For my first question I asked people there age, even though this is a closed question it will still help me to understand why and who is interested in Nike. As you can see through the image provided most people were in the age group of 14-17 and some others were 18-24 and others were 25-34. This tells me that more younger people were interested in the Nike survey. This will help me as I now have a better understanding of who I need to aim my advert at. I also believe that I received a higher percentage in the 14-17 age range because of where I distributed the survey which was Facebook and most of the people I have on Facebook are of that age, this tells me that in the future it might be a good idea to put my survey on other sites not just one.

As my second question I asked people their gender, again even though this is a closed question it will help me to understand what gender I should be focusing my advert towards. In my responses I saw that a higher percentage of males had taken my survey this tells me that when editing my advert I need to target men more than women.

I then asked if people had heard of Nike and for this answer I received 100% yes which is great as this tells me that my advert could easily go viral as Nike is a well known brand.

Next I asked people if they often watch adverts, even though this is again a closed question this well help me understand how many people will be watching my advert and will therefore be interested in the brand of Nike afterwards. When analysing the answers I noticed that many people had said they do not watch adverts often. This tells me that my advert is unlikely to have a high view point.

I then set up a link for people to watch my advert and rate it out of 5 stars for this question I got 100% 5 stars which tells me that people are impressed with the advert.

Next I asked people if they though that the advert promoted Nike well to this question everyone said yes, which I am really pleased with as this was my main aim.

I then asked people how they thought I could improve the advert and mainly answers were improve the green screen scene and make shots quicker, this can easily be done I am quite happy with the results on this question as it is not huge changes to my advert which means most people must think it is quite good.

I then asked people if they understood the narrative of the advert 83% said yes and 16% said no with this result I am actually quite happy as I was quite nervous that people would not understand what is going on as the advert is so short it does not really have the time to show the story develop properly.

In the following question I asked people if they would share the advert on social media or get involved with the hashtag, the responses to this question was 50 50. Which tells me that from reading the other answers people think the advert is good however they would not want to share it and therefore I need to improve my editing so that they will want to share the advert.

Following the first question I then asked people to explain their response to the previous question. Through analysing this question I have learn that it may not be my advert that people do not want to share but that people just do not like to share adverts. One response I got stated "I don't often share things unless it's huge and that didn't catch my attention well". This response tells me that if I can improve my advert in the ways stated in a question above then the advert could go viral.

Today I worked from home as it was snowing very heavily and I was unable to get into college. I analysed the survey I had distributed a few days ago asking people what they thought of my final edit of my advert. From looking at the answers that I have received it has helped me understand how to help me improve in this topic and even on future topics. Tomorrow I will improve my final edit and write an overall evaluation on the project as a whole and explain how I found it and how I would like to improve for further projects.
Second final edit
Evaluation
Overall evaluation
When seeing the initial brief I was actually really excited about this project because in high school this was my favourite part of media studies. The only thing that concerned me about the project was being able to edit confidently. I did not start to come up with ideas until we put ourselves into groups and picked our topic which was clothing. The group members and I did a mind map of what comes to mind when we think of clothing and one thing that was written was trainers so then we started talking about converse, Vans, Adidas and then started to mention that Nike had some of the most popular and best looking shoes out there, after this discussion we decided we wanted to do our topic on Nike. Our final idea was constantly changing through miscommunication in the group I had come up with the idea that we show three different sports and we see three different characters playing these sports but thanks to Nike we also see them go pro. The only thing that was missing was a good hashtag, then Chloe a group member said well why don’t we also show them tying up their shoe laces each in a different way and the hashtag was #howyoutieyours. I really liked this idea and so did everyone else, however as we went on and got on to our pitch we realised not everyone was clear with what the final idea was. The feedback we received from the pitch was just to make sure we are clear on the final idea and that we continue to discuss changes as a group and not just in a pair so that everyone is clear. We hoped to achieve a really good Nike idea that did justice to Nike and that made sense to everyone.
When creating the planning we did so much research into not just Nike but most trainer adverts so that we could see and compare how Nike is different to their rival companies. We also researched brand awareness of the company to see what they stand for and when they became successful. My most significant research findings was finding out what the Nike tick means and also who Nikes target audience is and how they go about approaching them. My research portfolio could be improved by doing some more research, however I struggled to find relevant research. I would say the most effective research method would be the survey that I distributed on Facebook, from this I got loads of responses that actually really helped me with planning the final idea. I would say the least effective research method was my secondary research where I found out about Nike as a brand because even though it did help me to understand who Nike is as a company it did not really help me with developing my idea.
In production I was the director which meant I was able to make the advert look exactly how I had wanted it to in my head. I found it really challenging to edit it to the way I wanted it with bad shots of people or different shots that I didn’t know had even been shot. A problem we did face during production was that we got all the way to Wardown park only to realise that the battery had been left charging at college. We had to call another group who we knew had a spare to come and meet us to give us their battery. Our idea didn’t change at all through production at all and our time management was actually really good we did take another day longer to film than everyone else but this was because we were a member down on one of the days which meant we couldn’t film certain scenes.
The advert is exactly how I wanted it to look so it meets initial intentions, our target audience was people who are interested in sport from the age of 18-35 then the secondary audience was 14-17 year olds who would we knew would be on social media and our more likely to see the hashtag. The needs of our target audience have been met as we included a song that would interest the audience and we included sporty scenes. I would say that the areas I need to improve on our being more bossy when being a director because when it came to editing some of the scenes don’t look very good because people weren’t doing what we were telling them to do. I have gained knowledge in how green screen works as I have never used that before. I wouldn’t say that it reflects industry standards because we do not have the equipment for that or the budget for it to look as good as that however I am still really happy with what I have managed to achieve.
I do think I challenged myself as I am not the most confident person when it comes to editing and I tried to limit myself to the amount of help I asked for from my peers who are more confident. I do think I could’ve challenged myself even more to do even better in this topic by taking charge more and having a go on the camera more often and stop being scared that the shots will come out bad or that people will judge me for not doing something right. I do think I have achieved everything I set out to and I am very proud of my work because I do think I have made a huge improvement from the last project in both the research element and the production and editing. I don’t find it difficult at all following my own schedule the only thing that is annoying is when the schedule goes wrong because of batteries being left behind or people forgetting props. I know that I need to work on my editing skills to achieve a better end product for the next project.
In conclusion I have enjoyed this project a lot and hope to use the knowledge I have gained in future projects.
