Today we carried on with editing in college, I am now able to carry on edting at home as the deadline is for Friday the 19th at 4pm. I have gotten really far through on my edit so far so hopefully it shouldn’t take me to long at home to be able to finish. I am very happy with what I have managed to achieve in such a short time considering I was so worried about my role when I was first told it.
Final edit
Live tv evaluation
As I am a second year I have always known that live tv was a unit in the brief I watched the second years produce and create their Christmas themed show when I was a first year and was so excited to create my own show as I saw the challenge but also the fun involved in the unit. I was concerned about working together as a whole class as this was something we had never done before and was not used to, I was also very concered about editing such a long piece as this was something I had not taken on either. We then got into our small groups to come up with our idea it took us a while as we was taking a lot of inspiration from “Ant n Dec’s Saturday night take away” however as we was going to be filming in October we defiantly knew we wanted to have a Halloween theme for the show. What we could not decided on was if we wanted a game show or a magazine show with a game show element. After a few chats and advice from different people we decided it would be better to go for the game show as we would not need as many people which would have been a challenge to find.
Research
We looked into so many different formats of live tv to understand how they all work and what different formats there are. I took a deep interest into chat shows, magazine shows and game shows as I knew we would not be going into producing a news show. I looked at the most popular shows on the most popular channels, I also found from my research that out of all the most watched channels itv 1 had the most live tv shows than any other channel so I decided to base most of my research on this channel. I then found that the most popular show on that channel was a soap “coronation street”. After finding this research I discussed with my group that they had found the same and that what we should do is try to advertise our show during the “Coronation street” as they have a very loyal following and will trust anything that is advertised to them as they trust the show. I would say that this was the most effective method of research that I had conducted as it taught me not just about live tv but also the target audience behaviours of different shows. I would say the least effective method of research I conducted was when I looked at what was on at the same time on the opposite channel at the time of “coronation street” to see their ratings and what their show is about. After finding out my role I also looked into what it is I will be doing and what type of equipment I will be using. I was say that my portfolio is not the strongest that I have however it really helped me when trying to decided what type of show we wanted.
Process
After we finished our research and had our final idea we then began to start planning our pitch we each divided the amount of slides between us all and worked on it both at home and at college. I feel that our pitch went really well and that since we first pitched my knowledge and understanding of what we need to make clear and what is not really relevant. At the end of the pitch there was not many questions asked by the floor which is a good sign as it means we made everything very clear to everyone. After we had pitched our tutors then went to disscuss which group had one and which show we were going to make. We was the successful and was the show that was picked. After this we then started to come up with different ideas as a class to develop the show and make it even better.
Once we had all been given our roles we started to block out in the tv studio, due to some technical issues we actually did not use the usual cameras which actually made filming easier as the cameras was a lot more lighter and easier to move around. I found that as a team/class we actually worked really well together. As I mentioned we did have some technical issues which were resolved by not having anyone in the gallery and having everyone in the tv studio. The product did not change the whole way through which is something we are very proud of.
The final product that I produced I am very happy with as this is the first time I had edited something so long usually the products I produce are only 15-25 mins long. When making the show we did not have to change the running order or any segments in the show which as a team we were really happy about. I have learnt so much from working on this unit and am especially proud of myself that I have gained more skills in the camera work and a better understanding that I can use in other projects.
I wouldn’t say that our product reflects industry standard however it does mean that we have gained a lot of knowledge about a different industry. I would say that we have met the needs of our target audience as we had well thought out show that we knew would fit in with our audience profile.
In conclusion I feel that I have learnt a lot about this industry that is live tv and have gained a lot of knowledge about all the different roles involved in the industry. I really would say that that I had challenged myself in this unit in many different ways and I am very excited to challenge myself again in the next unit. To prepare for the next unit I am going to start my research into the industry before hand so I will have a greater understanding of what it means to help me achieve a better grade each time.
