Overall Evaluation
When reading the brief for the first time I was really excited and nervous as this is something I have never done before however I was still really interested. I really looked forward to researching the codes and conventions of radio shows and how they work. I was quite concerned about the editing process as I was not very familiar with adobe audition. We then got into our groups and we were given the late night section, straight away my idea was club classics as this is what you usually hear on radios between 10-11pm. We then started researching late night shows and what games they play, how many presenters they usually have, what type of songs do they play and how to they interact with the audience. From conducting all this research into various different radio stations it helped us decide on our final idea which was a club classics show. The station that gave us inspiration was Heart fm as they have a club classics show which is very successful.
For the project I conducted a lot of research and found out so much that I never knew, I learnt about the target audiences for different radio shows. I also took a trip to global which is a company that is in charge of Heart fm, Capital fm and many more. From this I found out about how they run different radio shows and what to do if anything goes wrong. I asked questions such as how often do you play idents? How often do you update the songs you play? The trip was so interesting and it really helped with my research to learn how a radio show actually works. I also researched a analysed 3 radio shows which had the same theme as mine from doing this I learnt the set up of a radio show and what the presenters mainly talk about. I also conducted a survey to ask people what they would expect from a late night show, most of the answers were “club classics” this helped me so much and was therefore my most effective piece of research as it told me that our idea was really going to work. I would say that my least effective piece of research was when I looked up what deformation was as even though I did learn something new it was something that didn’t really effect my radio show. I think I could improve my research portfolio by analysing in more depth and because this is something I have realised it is something I can do easily in the future.
Our pitch went really well everyone knew the idea really clearly which meant that we were able to tell the audience our idea in depth so they could understand just as well as we did. I now have a deeper understanding of what different types of audiences there is and what each one means. I have learnt that radio production is more stressful than I realised and that the presenters are told what songs to play and that they are also scripted. I found the editing process the most challenging however I still really enjoyed it because I was not very familiar with adobe audition but it was really cool to hear the radio show coming together and sounding professional. I think the group found it most challenging to keep the radio show exactly to an hour when editing. Some of the group had to cut songs when some had to add in songs however we all managed to keep it to exactly 1 hour. The group worked so well together we all agreed on ideas and helped each other out when we each needed it. When planning the show we wrote the script so quickly as we all knew what we wanted our show to sound like. Some of the problems we faced was sourcing the music for the show as because of restrictions youtube was not working and there was no other platform for us to get the music from. This slowed down the process of editing and creating idents for the show. However we managed to get it fix and sourced the music from youtube. The idea for the show never changed the whole way through the process as a group we were so proud of our idea and knew that it would do well.
The radio show sounds so much better than I ever thought it would and I am so proud of what I have manged to achieve the radio show reflects Barnfield radio as a brand as the target audience is media savy and wants to be in the know and I believe that after hours has done this really well. I believe I have met the need of the target audience and I know this because I conducted a second survey and asked people what they thought of the show.
Here are some of the answers:
When I asked people what they thought of the music and if it suited the theme of the show I received answers such as “Yes, all the music I would listen to in a club are on here” this is such a good response as it tells me that my group did something right. However I also received responses such as “Not sure what the theme was so I’m unsure. This could be made a bit more clear” This also helps me as I know now that for next time in any project I should make it very clear what the theme is to engage the audience. I also asked people if they thought the show followed well for this question I received these answers “Yes because they are both aware of what they have to say and when they have to say it there is no hesitation” and “yes the transitions were very good and flowed well” these responses are going to really help me with future projects because even though I will not be doing radio again I know what to do to make my work the best it can be. I would say the strengths would be how confident myself and Chris were as presenters as this made the show less awkward and it didn’t seem forced. I would say that the show could be even better if I was more familiar with adobe audition as the transitions and idents would be better with less gaps. I would say that the product could be close to industry standard not quite heart fm but close. I have gained so much knowledge about radio, the editing process and how many jobs are in radio.
I set myself personal targets to not ask for help unless I absolutely could not work out how to do it myself and this seemed to really work for me as I learnt a lot about the editing process and how to use audition. I defiantly believe that I achieved what I set out to do and even much more. I learnt that I am very interested in radio and it is and has a lot more following than I thought it did.
